Helping my child read, from decoding to comprehension

Learning to read has two stages: decoding the words, then understanding what they tell. KAÏDO, a screen-free voice companion, supports reading from ages 6 to 11 (CP to CM2): it listens to the child read aloud, helps unlock a word and grasp the meaning, without ever turning every page into a quiz.

Two ages of reading, one companion

In CP-CE1 (1st-2nd grade), reading is first about decoding: blending sounds, recognising syllables, not tripping on a long word. All the energy goes into decoding, and meaning comes after. KAÏDO listens, gives it time, and helps unlock a word sound by sound, without reading it for the child.

In CM1-CM2 (4th-5th grade), the word is no longer the problem: the hidden meaning is. Understanding that a character is lying, guessing an unspoken emotion, linking two distant sentences. KAÏDO makes that leap with the child, through questions that lead them to read between the lines.

How KAÏDO supports reading

  1. 1

    The child reads aloud

One press on the sphere, and they read their text. KAÏDO listens, without interrupting at every hesitation: it lets the child reach the end of the sentence.

  2. 2

It unlocks a word, it lights up a meaning

On a hard word, KAÏDO guides the decoding: “the start of this word, do you recognise it?”. On an inference, it asks: “The hero hesitates: what do you think he is feeling?”.

  3. 3

The child understands, the light cheers them on

When the child decodes the word or grasps what the text suggests, the sides of the sphere light up. Reading moves forward through pleasure, not control.

The joy of reading, without the quiz

Nothing puts a child off reading faster than an avalanche of questions after every paragraph. KAÏDO does the opposite: it asks the right question, at the right moment, and stays quiet the rest of the time. Reading remains a story you follow, not a test you endure.

  • Decoding (CP-CE1, ages 6-8): unlocking a long word, sound by sound, without prompting.
  • Reading aloud: reading steadily, respecting punctuation, gaining fluency.
  • Deep comprehension (CM1-CM2, ages 9-11): inferences, characters’ emotions, the unspoken.
  • The pleasure: talking about a story, sharing an opinion, wanting to read on.

Not a quiz. A shared story.

And you, you are reassured

You don't always have ten minutes to listen every evening. KAÏDO takes over when you can't, and the parent app gives you a weekly picture: where decoding stands, whether comprehension is keeping up. Not a table of grades: just enough to know all is well.

The level of guidance adjusts from the app: more decoding help on tired days, more demand on meaning when the child is ready. Never the answer for them. KAÏDO is designed in France, screen-free, with GDPR-compliant data that is never sold or used for advertising.

Your questions about primary-school reading

How can I help my child read without it becoming a chore?

By spacing out the questions. KAÏDO listens to the child read, unlocks a word when needed and asks a single good question about meaning, not a quiz after every line. Reading stays a pleasure, not a test.

My child reads well but does not understand what they read. What can I do?

Common in CM1-CM2 (ages 9-11): decoding and understanding are two skills. KAÏDO works on inferences (“the hero hesitates, what does that tell us about him?”) to lead the child to read between the lines, without ever handing them the interpretation.

Does KAÏDO read the word for my child when they get stuck?

No. It guides the decoding sound by sound (“the first sound, can you hear it?”) so the child finds the word themselves. From the app, you adjust the level of help, never as far as feeding the answer.

From what age does KAÏDO support reading?

From CP (1st grade), when the child learns to decode, through to CM2 (5th grade), on deep comprehension. The sphere adapts its questions to age: patience and sounds at first, meaning and nuance later.

Give your child the joy of reading back.
